Aims

FCUL’s 2nd Cycle of Studies in Chemistry provides up-to-date advanced training to our students with the following skills:

  • Ability to independently innovate, plan and execute research & development activities in the chemistry field, either in academia, commercial and public research labs, industry, and services;
  • Ability to synthesize, prepare, formulate, optimize, test or apply new molecules, substances or materials, using the acquired theoretical concepts, to implement modern and sustainable methodologies in line with the new trends of ‘Green Chemistry‘, as well as to use advanced characterization techniques;
  • Acquisition of knowledge to apply protocols and develop techniques of analysis for product quality and safety control, validation of analytical methods, determination of priority and emerging chemical compounds using modern instrumentation;
  • Implementation and understanding of good laboratory practices minimizing the associated risks, becoming aware of the professional, social, environmental and ethical responsibilities inherent to the performance of chemical activity, and its influence on eventual vulnerabilities to chronic metabolic and degenerative diseases;
  • Development of transversal personal competences, namely, critical thinking, teamwork skills, organization, planning and communication of scientific information obtained in an academic or business environment.

Students also acquire training in management and planning, learning to communicate and expose key topics in the business environment. The 2nd Cycle of Studies in Chemistry also allows access to the 3rd Cycle of Studies (Doctorate) in several scientific areas.
